Bogeys haunt Manitobans
Wytinck has bad Canadian Am day
KEN GIGLIOTTI / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS archives Manitoba Amateur champ Josh Wytinck is having a tough time at nationals.
The news was almost all bad Wednesday for Manitoba golfers at the Canadian Men's Amateur championship near Ottawa.
Off to a good start Tuesday with a one-under-par 71, Manitoba Amateur champ Josh Wytinck stumbled with a pair of triple bogeys Wednesday and shot seven-over 79 at Camelot Golf and Country Club. He finished six-over 150 for two days and is not likely to make the cut of the low 70 players and ties after the first 36 holes of the 72-hole competition.
The cut for the 240-player field will come today because play was halted for three hours Wednesday afternoon by thunderstorms. Dozens of players were left on Camelot and club de golf Outaouais when darkness fell.
Manitoba's only apparent hope to play on this week was Derek East of St. Charles Country Club, who shot a one-under 71 Tuesday.
East had a late tee time Wednesday at Camelot and will finish his second round this morning.
As for interprovincial team play, Manitoba failed to make much noise this year. Garth Collings of Breezy Bend and Aaron Cockerill of Teulon were only marginally better than Wytinck on Wednesday.
Cockerill shot a one-over 73 at Camelot but was eight-over through two days. Collings was 76 in Round 2 at Camelot and was nine-over for two days.
"We came, we tried to play well and we did as well as we could," Collings said late Wednesday.
His own erratic play was disappointing, he said.
"I had way too many three-putts," Collings said. "And too many others."
The 54-year-old three-time Manitoba Am champ had two double bogeys and one triple bogey in the first two days.
Manitoba's team total of plus-five Wednesday and plus-nine total put it well back in sixth spot in the annual Willingdon Cup competition. Ontario was the easy winner at 13-under for two days.
Among the other Manitoba players at the championship, Southwood's Bryce Barr, playing at club de golf Outaouais on Day 2, shot 73 and was plus-five.
Breezy Bend's Jesse Skelton had a 75 at Camelot to go with his opening 78 at Outaouais.
Niakwa's Spencer Harris followed his 79 with a 78 Wednesday at Outaouais.
Along with East, Bobby Wiebe of Pine Ridge (77 Tuesday), and Charlie Boyechko of Southwood (81) were still out on the courses at darkness Wednesday and will finish this morning.
Stephane Dubois of Brantford, Ont., was at the top of the incomplete leaderboard at 10-under through two rounds.
