Celebrating 30 years of Manitoba authors

THE Manitoba Writers' Guild is celebrating its 30th anniversary by hosting a symposium to showcase the talent that has put our province on the literary map.

The symposium "festival" runs May 9-12 and will feature readings by emerging writers as well as scholarly presentations by academics, music, song and even a debate on the most remarkable Manitoba books.

The event kicks off May 9 with a series of New Voices: Writers Under 30 readings at the Winnipeg Free Press News Cafe (237 McDermot Ave.).

From May 10 to 12, the last 100 years of Manitoba writing will be explored through a series of keynote speakers, panels, readings and research papers.

The celebration ends May 12 at the West End Cultural Centre with a words-and-music cabaret. Performers will include: Charlene Diehl, Steve Kirby, Patrick Friesen, Marilyn Lerner, Margaret Sweatman, the Glenn Buhr Band and Tomson Highway.
