BRANDON -- The past year has been a busy one for Ginger Kearns, a former Brandonite making a big splash in the New York City theatre scene.

Kearns is now a published playwright -- her first play, This is a Play About Artists, was named one of the Top 20 shows in the 2013 New York International Fringe Festival.

The play is about two ex-lovers, a performance artist and a poet, who use art to relive and explore their tragic love affair. Kearns said the play touches on her own experiences in New York.

"It's about this woman who is a performance artist... who decides she's going to quit being a performing artist because all of her art experiences are about ex-lovers," Kearns said. "That I kind of drew from my own life. I feel like a lot of time as an artist, when we're writing things or when I'm writing sketch comedy, I'm making fun of things that are sort of painful in your life."

Kearns played the role of the narrator and performed in five shows during the Fringe Festival.

Kearns' parents, Linda and Dwight Kearns, still live in Brandon, and she took part in a dance class at her mother's studio, Dance Images, while in town.

This is a Play About Artists was highlighted in Show Business Weekly by John Rowell, who said Kearns' play was "generating buzz" this past summer.

One theatre critic who was in the audience on opening night of the play was Maura Kelley of nytheatre.com.

Kelley wrote in her review, "You don't have to be an artist to enjoy this show. If you're currently trying to get over a breakup, you might learn something."

Kearns recently finished filming her part in an upcoming independent movie called Hungry Hearts, directed by Saverio Costanzo. She has a principal role in the film, playing the best friend of the lead actor, Adam Driver. Driver is best known for his role as Adam Sackler in the HBO hit series Girls; he can also be seen in the latest Coen brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis.

Kearns wrapped up her scenes, which were filmed in New York, at the beginning of December. The movie is expected to be released in 2014.

Kearns moved to the Big Apple after graduating from Neelin High School to pursue her acting dream. She was accepted into the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Manhattan where she studied musical theatre. She later went on to pursue her education in film and screenwriting.

She has appeared on The Sopranos and is a member of the sketch comedy trio White Cotton Panties.
