Finalists for golfer of year announced

FOUR finalists, including Manitoba Amateur champion Derek East, have emerged for the Manitoba amateur golfer of the year award, Golf Manitoba announced Wednesday.

St. Charles' East, Teulon's Aaron Cockerill, Breezy Bend's Garth Collings and Pine Ridge's Josh Wytinck are in the running for the 39th edition of the award, to be handed out at the annual general meeting and awards dinner on Monday at Rossmere Country Club.

Cockerill, currently a junior at the University of Idaho, captured the provincial match play championship and was runner-up to East at the Nott Autocorp Men's Amateur Championship at Neepawa. He also claimed the Manitoba rural championship by 17 shots on his home course, then added a 47th at the Canadian Amateur.

Collings, already a member of the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum, won the Manitoba Senior in his first year of eligibility, that by 19 strokes.

He was second at the Manitoba Mid-Amateur and was ninth at the Canadian Senior.

East, who was the medallist from the match-play championship qualifying rounds and eventual runner-up, went wire to wire at the men's amateur, recording a 13-under-par total for his victory.

The St. Charles member also captured one of the province's top invitational tournaments, the Elmhurst Invitational.

Wytinck was this year's runner-up at the match-play qualifier, bowing out in the semifinals. He was fourth at the men's amateur and 41st at the Canadian Amateur and this fall won three tournaments in the U.S. for the University of Manitoba Bisons golf team.

Golf Manitoba also announced three players received honourable mentions for the annual award: junior champ Travis Fredbor of Selkirk, women's senior champ Rhonda Orr of Southwood and women's amateur champ Bri-ann Tokariwski of Elmhurst.
