Firefighters to get own licence plates

THE province will make specialty licence plates available to firefighters, Premier Greg Selinger announced Thursday.

"Firefighters put their lives at risk on a daily basis and I can't think of a better way to pay homage to their dedication and commitment than a licence plate they can proudly display," said Selinger. "This specialty licence plate will provide firefighters across the province with a common, visual bond."

Manitoba's firefighter plate will be a distinctive red in colour, with the phrase Serving Our Community along with the firefighters' Maltese cross. The Manitoba firefighter licence plate initiative, to be administered by Manitoba Public Insurance, is expected to be implemented by early summer.

"Manitoba Public Insurance has been working closely with the stakeholders to ensure the licence plate reflects the proud history of all firefighters and meets the needs of all partners," said Selinger.

The plates will cost $70, with $30 directed to the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Firefighters Burn Fund. Licence-plate applications can be downloaded from the following sites: www.mpi.mb.ca or www.ibam.mb.ca .
