First Nation's youth walk to fight Bill C-45

CLOSE to 30 young people from a First Nation in the Interlake walked to Manitoba's legislature Monday night as part of an Idle No More demonstration.

"They're trying to make sure we protect our lakes," said organizer Michael Kannon. The youth are from Jackhead, now known as Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation.

Between 40 and 50 people, including elders travelling closely behind in vehicles, left their community Friday morning.

The youth are walking to show their disapproval of the federal government's Bill C-45 and to show their solidarity with other First Nations in the effort to protect their treaty rights, Kannon said.

The federal omnibus budget bill includes changes to the Indian Act, the act protecting navigable waters and the Environmental Assessment Act.

On the front steps of the legislature, demonstrators prepared to welcome the young people from the Interlake First Nation.

Kinonjeoshtegon Chief Dave Traverse and Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Derek Nepinak were expected to address the protesters.

Has this not run its course. Everyone else in this country is accountable so why should the Aboriginal Communites be accountable. It is quite obvious the misapprioation of funds which Chief Sinclair has made and yet we still cover these denonstrations in the press. If the media would let it go I'm sure it would stop this, once again waste of tax dollars???
