Fishing licence fees gutted this weekend

Manitobans will be able to fish provincewide without a licence this Saturday and Sunday.

The provincial government is also waiving entry fees at all its parks for three days, beginning today, Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh said Thursday.

"Fishing is a great way for families and friends to spend time together outdoors, and we have some world-class fishing opportunities right across the province," said Mackintosh.

"I hope Manitobans and visitors will pick up a rod and reel and take the opportunity to fish for free."

Summer family fishing weekends have been offered in Manitoba since 1992. The only exception to the free fishing will be in national parks, where a federal licence is still required.

Anglers fishing without a licence will be allowed to keep a conservation limit of fish, which varies by species. Manitobans can review the 2012 Manitoba Anglers' Guide for specific regulations.

A copy of the guide can be obtained at www.manitobafisheries.com .

To celebrate the annual event, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is hosting an amateur photo contest to promote fishing as a fun family activity.

"We want families to capture the beauty of Manitoba's scenic waterways and post their photos on our Facebook page by June 17," said MWF president Reid Woods. "Three random names will be drawn for family gift packs, each valued at more than $100."
