Gunnarson receives prestigious award

Famed Winnipeg escape artist Dean Gunnarson can now claim company with magicians such as David Copperfield and Doug Henning after winning one of the world's top honours in magic at an event in Shenzhen, China.

This week he was awarded the Merlin, which is the highest award bestowed by the world's largest magic organization, the International Society of Magicians. Gunnarson is the first escape artist to be given the award.

Past Merlin winners include Copperfield, Henning, Siegfried & Roy and Criss Angel.

The event was promoted at a press conference in Shenzhen after Gunnarson accepted the honour from society chairman Tony Hassini.

Earlier in the day, the Winnipegger pulled off a daring escape. He was handcuffed and chained to the tracks of a roller-coaster, breaking free and jumping 10 metres to a huge air cushion just as the roller-coaster raced by.
