Hail claims centre depends on demand

A decision by Manitoba Public Insurance to open a dedicated hail claims centre depends on the number of claims opened today.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, a total of 1,100 hails claims had been opened with MPI in connection to a major thunderstorm that dropped hailstones throughout Manitoba, including Winnipeg.

MPI spokesman Brian Smiley said the Crown auto insurer won't know until late today whether it should open a special claims centre to deal only with vehicles damaged by hail.

Hail as big as walnuts fell across southern Manitoba Saturday night, from Gretna to Emerson to Winnipeg.

One of the worst hailstorms came in July 1996 when 24,494 hail-related claims were made. That cost $53 million in damage.

The most significant storm came August 2001 when more than 2,500 hail-related claims were reported to MPI.
