It's Day 17 and still no Butterscotch

Butterscotch the cat is still at large.

BRANDON -- The wayward Brandon cat whose plight has been broadcast across the nation has still not been captured as efforts enter Day 17.

The presumed stray, nicknamed Butterscotch, has eluded capturing efforts by Brandon and Area Lost Animals volunteers since July 23. The organization said a man has hindered the rescue.

"Right now we're dealing with it as best we can," said BALA organizer Toni Gramiak, who said they're up against "mysterious occurrences."

Over the weekend, Gramiak said the man scared away volunteers, shone lights, clapped his hands and damaged some BALA cat traps.

The easily spooked cat has been located several times, but has proven tremendously difficult to catch, and the man's purported actions have changed the cat's behaviour.

The cat first grabbed headlines when it was seen wandering the streets of the Wheat City with a bird feeder on its head, which BALA volunteers believed made it difficult for the cat to see, eat and drink.

Bits of the bird feeder remain, including wood around the cat's neck; however, the cat is now able to eat.

"We're learning about his new patterns, we continue to ask people to let him feel invisible where he is and report it, we ask that people try not to capture this cat," Gramiak said.

The volunteers are asking anyone who sees Butterscotch, or believes they have seen the man disrupting their efforts, to contact them at 204-724-7033.
