Man killed in head-on collision

BRANDON -- A 69-year-old Carberry man is dead after a head-on crash just south of Brandon on Tuesday afternoon.

Blue Hills RCMP responded to a collision on Highway 10 and Road 48 North, south of Brandon. A late-model Chevrolet Sonic was travelling northbound on Highway 10 when it collided with an SUV going southbound. Initial investigation shows the car had drifted across the centre line.

The collision happened on a straight, newer two-lane portion of the highway.

The man didn't appear responsive when he was taken from the car and emergency crews on scene attempted to resuscitate him before placing him in an ambulance.

The driver of the SUV, an 87-year-old woman from Hartney, was taken to hospital, where she was in stable condition, police say.

Highway 10 in both directions was closed by the province from Highway 2 to Highway 349 for a few hours. Dozens of vehicles were lined up on the shoulder shortly after the crash.

Mounties and Brandon Fire and Emergency Services remained on scene as investigators took photos of the crash during the preliminary investigation.

Police said alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the collision and police say it appears both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
