Manitoba wages rise at snail's pace

AVERAGE weekly earnings in Manitoba grew at one of the slowest paces in the country in 2011, according to new data released Thursday.

Statistics Canada said from December 2010 to December 2011, earnings for payroll employees -- people who work for someone as opposed to being self-employed -- grew by 1.4 per cent to $814.38 from $803.42.

That was the fourth-smallest increase in the country, and was a full percentage point below the national average increase of 2.4 per cent ($888.26 versus $867.84).

The only provinces to see smaller wage gains were Nova Scotia (0.5 per cent), Ontario (0.7 per cent) and Prince Edward Island (1.1 per cent).

Newfoundland and Labrador saw the biggest 12-month gain, at 5.8 per cent, followed by Alberta at 5.2 per cent.

The November-to-December increase in earnings in Manitoba was 0.3 per cent, versus 0.7 per cent nationally.

The modest growth left Manitoba with the fourth-lowest average weekly earnings in the country at the end of the year, ahead of only the three Maritime provinces.

Manitoba was also one of seven provinces to see an increase in the number of payroll employees over that same 12-month period. Employment here grew by 0.7 per cent to 565,500 workers from 561,300.

That was in spite of a 0.1-per-cent dip in employment levels from November to December.
