Manitobans make noise at Toronto music fest

MANITOBANS will be making a big noise in Toronto next week.

A total of 15 bands and singer-songwriters will converge on the city to play North by Northeast, an annual music festival and conference being held June 11-17. Local acts playing showcases include the Vibrating Beds, the Noble Thiefs, the F-Holes, This Hisses, Hauter, Mise en Scene, Enjoy Your Pumas, JP Hoe, Ingrid Gatin, Jenny Berkel, Feed the Birds, Katie Murphy, the Nonsuch and Mira Black.

The artists will have a chance to shmooz with industry members at the 17th annual Manitoba Music/Manitoba Film & Music party at the Drake Hotel on June 15.

NXNE also includes a film festival as part of its program and this year the documentary Happily Dysfunctional: The Story of Transistor 66 Records will be screened at the National Film Board.

The 26-minute film, directed by Steve Ward and produced by Charles Konowal, examines the local record label Transistor 66 and is currently being aired on MTS Winnipeg on Demand.
