Brandon residents are taking mosquito fogging into their own hands.
But good luck to them — only two local businesses have mosquito foggers left in stock, while others are scrambling to get more in.
"We have run out a couple times," said John Hofer, manager of Total Farm Supply. "I am getting from three different suppliers now."
The propane-operated foggers have been on the market for around $100 for several years. They use a pesticide to fog properties, keeping the mosquitoes under control for hours.
Despite two rounds of city-wide fogging, the trap counts showed the number of mosquitoes continuing to climb. A third round of fogging took place Wednesday night.
Total Farm Supply and Poulin’s Pest Control were the only Brandon businesses contacted by the Sun Thursday morning with mosquito foggers in stock.
Home Hardware Building Centre, Canadian Tire and The Incredible Country Hardware Store (TSC) have all been sold out of foggers for more than a week.
"It varies so much year to year," Home Hardware manager Trevor Kowalchuk said. "Last year we sold quite a few and the year before we sold maybe two."
A waiting list for mosquito foggers to arrive back in stock at Home Hardware already has about 15 names on it.
Meanwhile, fogger sales at Total Farm Supply have skyrocketed this year.
"I would guess that we have probably already sold 150 this summer and only 20 last year," Hofer said.
Poulin’s Pest Control offers one more option to control mosquitoes on properties for longer than the personal foggers. Professionals can spray properties with diluted malathion, similar to what the City of Brandon does.
Staff warns that they already have a waiting list of customers and it may take time for them to get caught up.
The next set of trap counts is expected to be released on Tuesday.
