New adult-abuse registry a first

The province's new adult-abuse registry is now in place to help protect vulnerable adults and patients living in health-care settings from abuse and neglect.

Health Minister Theresa Oswald and Family Services and Labour Minister Jennifer Howard said Wednesday the registry, the first of its kind in Canada, will help prevent individuals who abuse or neglect vulnerable people from working with them in the future.

Oswald said the names of people who have abused or neglected adults with an intellectual disability began to be placed on the registry in January, when it became operational.

The government created the abuse registry after an incident a few years ago in which a pair of care workers left a cognitively impaired person in a vehicle while they watched a movie.

The registry lets prospective employers check if a job applicant has committed acts of abuse or neglect.

New regulations taking effect Friday require the province's Protection for Persons in Care Office to refer cases in which a person abused or neglected a patient in a hospital or personal-care home to the registry, where a committee will decide whether to list the person's name.
