Province's permit activity drops

MANITOBA was one of four provinces to see a drop in building permit activity in February, according to new Statistics Canada figures.

The agency said Manitoba municipalities issued $173.2 million worth of permits during the month. That was a drop of 14.4 per cent from the $202.5 million worth of permits issued in January.

The only province to see a bigger percentage decline was Prince Edward Island, at 71.1 per cent.

Manitoba's decline was concentrated on the residential side of the market, where permit values fell by 29.4 per cent to $96.6 million due to a weaker demand for both single- and multi-family permits. Non-residential permit values rose by 16.6 per cent to $76.7 million.

February's combined total was still a 35.4 per cent improvement from a year earlier.

StatsCan says the value of building permits issued rose 7.5 per cent to $6.5 billion in February.
