Rockin' the Fields -- right after spraying the fields

BRANDON -- Rockin' the Fields of Minnedosa's last-minute preparations included spraying the site for mosquitoes and setting up the mainstage.

The festival used an aircraft to spray the site Wednesday night, similar to what organizers have done for the last few years.

Unlike the debate about fogging in Brandon, festival spokesman Tom Crook said they haven't had any negative feedback about spraying annually.

"We are practically in the country, and there is no difference than farmers spraying on their fields," Crook said.

Minnedosa does not fog for mosquitoes in town, and mosquitoes have been noticeably worse than in communities that did fog.

Meanwhile, no major changes have been made for the 11th annual music festival.

"Some improvements have been made to the roads in the site and we got a new spotlight for the mainstage," Crook said. "Mostly it has been a lot of just maintaining the site."

The festival opened its gates at noon Thursday. Crook said the lineup began forming Wednesday night.

"The phone has been ringing off the hook for the past few days, so I don't know right now how many tickets have been sold," he said. "But there are still tickets available over the phone and at the gate."

Attendance at the festival has been growing over the past few years.

Last year's festival, the 10th annual, drew more than 2,000 people each day -- compared with only 400 who came out to the first revived festival in 2004.

The music gets underway today with the Sheepdogs, Harlequin and Brandon's Until Red playing the mainstage.
