Russell teen faces child porn charges

A Russell teen is facing several charges including voyeurism and distribution of child pornography after posting an inappropriate photo to a social media website.

According to the Russell Banner, the teen took a photo of another boy using the washroom.

A source familiar with the situation, who asked to remain anonymous, said the incident took place at Major Pratt High School.

She said the boy, who is 14 years old, videotaped another boy on the toilet from above as a joke and posted it to Snapchat.

Snapchat is a social media site which allows photos, videos and other media to be shared between users. The application allows friends to send messages with a self-destructing timeframe.

For example, a photo may be sent to a friend, but disappears after a 10-second window, allowing the end user to only view it for that length of time.

However, the application has come under fire as savvy users can grab screen shots of the media within the time, keeping the image forever.

Several of the accused’s friends saw the video of the boy using the washroom and were laughing.

The incident was reported to a teacher, who forwarded the information to the RCMP, the source said.

Further police investigation led to the discovery of a topless photo from a teenaged girl on the phone. The photo was sent at the request of the boy.

"I know that he feels terrible about the whole thing," the source said. "It feels like the situation spiralled out of control."

As a result, the boy has been charged with voyeurism, two counts of producing child pornography and two counts of distributing of child pornography, according to the Banner.

RCMP media officer Tara Seel said he is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

"It’s still considered an active investigation," Seel said.

No names will be released under the Youth Justice Act.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
