Safeway workers feel like a million
Group of 24 employees splits $1-M lotto windfall
IT'S not enough to check out of their jobs, but a group of Canada Safeway employees could fill a shopping cart with cash if they want to.
A group of 24 from the grocery chain's Dakota Street store will split $1 million from last Friday's Lotto MaxMillions draw.
That works out to $41,666 per person.
The group holds one of the four winning million-dollar tickets -- three were sold in Winnipeg, the fourth in rural Manitoba -- from Friday's draw.
"It's a nice amount of money," said an employee who wouldn't give his name on Monday.
"It's pretty exciting. It's a nice 'take care of some things' for some people."
The employee said his fellow employees don't play the lottery on a regular basis or use the same numbers all the time.
"We usually play when it gets to an enormous level," he said.
"We all tossed in $5 this time. We've won free plays and we've won small amounts of money where we just let it roll until next time.
"I don't think we'll let it roll this time."
Andrea Marantz, a spokeswoman for the Western Canada Lottery Corp., said on Monday morning, all they knew was one of the four winners had discovered they had won by checking their ticket at a self-service lottery check terminal during the weekend.
But Marantz said by noon three of the four winners had contacted the corporation and the process had started to get their windfall into their hands by the end of the week.
"One of the winners is from rural Manitoba and two others are from Winnipeg," she said.
"They all want to come in to get their prizes. We always find that when it's a big one, people want to come in."
Marantz said the fourth winner still has not contacted the corporation.
There were two grand-prize winners for the Lotto Max $50-million prize, but the winners in British Columbia and Alberta will split that jackpot.
