Schools put in lockdown

The Pas RCMP have arrested two teens who were caught walking through the streets with what turned out to be an air pistol, triggering an hour-long lockdown Thursday of all area schools.

Police said they were called to Opaskwayak Cree Nation just after 11 a.m. and quickly arrested the accused without incident.

Initial reports were the firearm may have been a rifle.

RCMP said a second gun-related call came in shortly after.

That prompted police to advise school officials to lock down the schools in both OCN and the neighbouring community of The Pas just before the noon hour.

Police finally cleared the situation just after 1 p.m., determining the second call was connected to the arrests they'd already made.

Kelsey School Division superintendent Doug Long said all five schools were affected.

The Pas has two elementary schools, one junior high school, one high school and an alternative school.

"In some schools, the kids are all moved to one area of the building and in others they are put in different sections. The critical thing is that no kids go out," said Long.

Long said lockdowns are infrequent in The Pas, adding this is the first one this school year.

The ages of the two teen suspects, and the charges they are facing, have not been released.

RCMP said the investigation is ongoing.
