Winnipeggers pray for cardinals

WHILE black smoke signified on the other side of the world no new pope has been selected in Rome, Roman Catholics in Winnipeg joined Catholics around the world to pray for the cardinals.

Catholics in downtown Winnipeg went to pray at Tuesday's daily noon-hour mass at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral.

While it was the regularly scheduled mass, everyone in the sanctuary knew it was special.

"Today's mass is a mass for the new pope and for the church," Father Ken Barclay told more than 100 parishioners.

"Today events are taking place in Rome that will affect us all."

Winnipegger Sheldon Fontaine said he was praying for a new pope, but he was also rooting for something else.

"Hopefully it is a Canadian," Fontaine said, referring to Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who is one of a handful of cardinals mentioned in recent days as pope possibilities.

"It would be good for North America if it was."

Other parishioners said they didn't really care where the pope is from so long as he is a good pope.

"It's nice to see they are considering a Canadian cardinal, but you want somebody who understands the world as a whole," said John Rodrigues.

"It also helps the church evolve by having different people at the helm."
