Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange

Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (15,394.38, up 79.25 points):

Talisman Energy Inc. (TSX:TLM). Oil and gas. Up $1.40, or 13.25 per cent, to $11.97 on 15.3 million shares. The Calgary-based oil and gas producer confirmed Wednesday that it has been approached by Repsol SA regarding possible deals, but the Spanish company may be more interested in scooping up parts of the company than buying the whole package. Talisman is a perennial subject of takeover speculation.

Bell Aliant Inc. (TSX:BA). Communication services. Up $3.34, or 11.85 per cent, to $31.53 on 11.7 million shares. Canada's biggest telecom company, BCE Inc., is moving to privatize affiliate Bell Alliant by buying up the the stake that it doesn't already own in a $3.95-billion deal. Shares in BCE Inc. (TSX:BCE), which currently owns 44 per cent of Bell Aliant, were up 81 cents, or 1.65 per cent, at $49.82 on 4.2 million shares.

Romarco Minerals Inc. (TSX:R). Miner. Up two cents, or 2.22 per cent, to 92 cents on 3.8 million shares.

RB Energy Inc. (TSX:RBI). Miner. Up 1.5 cents, or 4.62 per cent, to 34 cents on 3.8 million shares.

Trimel Pharmaceuticals Corp. (TSX:TRL). Drug manufacturer. Unchanged at 62 cents on 3.6 million shares.

Toronto Venture Exchange (1,011.84, up 0.96 of a point):

Red Pine Exploration Inc. (TSXV:RPX). Miner. Unchanged at two cents on seven million shares.

Pine Cliff Energy Ltd. (TSX:PNE). Oil and gas. Down two cents, or 1.12 per cent, to $1.76 on 5.4 million shares.

Companies reporting major news:

TransCanada Corp. (TSX:TRP). Oil and gas. Up 79 cents, or 1.44 per cent, to $55.61 on 1.6 million shares. The company says its $800-million Northern Courier pipeline proposal has been given the green light by the Alberta Energy Regulator. The project is designed to connect Suncor Energy Inc.'s (TSX:SU) planned Fort Hills oilsands mine to a tank farm near Fort McMurray, Alta., 90 kilometres to the south.
