She very much enjoyed the two plants of pansies on her balcony at Victoria Landing last summer. Helen’s main occupation was working as a housekeeper. She made a wonderful fruit cake with a heavenly almond icing and many other of Alex’s favorites. Helen and Alex travelled to many places around the world. The 200 plus pair of salt & pepper shakers she collected held special memories of their travels. Helen also enjoyed a game of Bingo, especially the Friday night games at Village Green. Doris was born at Roland, Manitoba on December 19th, 1924, the eldest child of Mervyn and Phyllis Mullin. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers-in-law Melvin Mogk and Fred Kempthorne, Lillian Kempthorne, and special niece Lynda Walters. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Eldon Kempthorne and their children and their families: son Dave (Merrilee) and their children Derek (Larissa), Andrea (Dean Anhorn) and great granddaughter and namesake Braleigh Fern, and Jenny; daughter Nancy (Clint Haight), and their sons Drew and Wade; son Eric (Erika Ritchie) and their children Katrin, Monica, Patrick and Natalia; sister Joan Mogk and brothers Elvis (Ruth), Glenn (Rita) and Verne Mullin; sisters-in-law Vera (Del) Saban, Gladys (Keith) Tufts, brother- in-law Archie (Sharon) Kempthorne, plus numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held on January 20th,2010 followed by a memorial service where the eulogy was beautifully delivered by her three eldest grandchildren. Doris grew up on a farm in the Myrtle district of Manitoba. She attended school in Lowstoft, Myrtle and Roland schools and completed her grade 12 in Brandon. She entered St. Boniface School of Nursing where she enjoyed the next three years in residence and graduated with her Registered Nurse designation. Many lifetime friendships were made during this training. She worked at St. Boniface for several years until she was asked by Drs. Don and Ethel McPhail to move to Boissevain and assist with the opening of the new Boissevain, Morton and Minto Memorial Hospital. It was here that she met and married Eldon and they were blessed with three children. In 1966 the family moved to Saskatoon. Doris was extremely fond of her Irish heritage and her St. Patrick Day parties are legendary. One highlight of her life was her trip to Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. She loved to travel and her plans always included the family. There were several ski trips to Jasper, breaks in Hawaii and Disneyland, fun at Briers and we returned every summer to “her cottage” at Lake Max. Many are the fond memories of Canada Day celebrations at Phillip’s Landing, cruises on the pontoon boat under a full moon in July, teaching the children to water ski, and Christmas in July just to name a few. It was a great bonding place for the family. Doris loved to entertain. Even while busy with family life and a career she found time for crafts. Her meticulous approach allowed her to put a personal touch on any project she undertook. When she retired she started porcelain doll making which combined many of her talents…artistic face painting combined with sewing and knitting to dress the dolls. She made most of her dolls to give to others in her life.Another highlight of her life was the occasion of our 50th Wedding Anniversary. The children organized a marvelous reception and dinner at the Willis Pavilion at the International Peace Garden and over 100 guests including friends and relatives were present. In her later years Doris’ health began to decline so we decided to return to our “roots” to be with family and friends in Boissevain. We felt welcomed by the complete community with open arms and open hearts and for that we are eternally grateful. We, her family, are blessed to have had the opportunity to share her life and we are grateful for all the memories we will cherish… Doris was a true friend and will be greatly missed.
One of her favourite Irish Blessings:May the road rise to meet you,May the wind be always at your back,May the sun shine warm upon your face,The rains fall soft upon your fields,And until we meet again,May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

LOUGHRAN: Janet Kirkness Loughran. Janet was born to parents James and Hannah (Aim) Loughran on April 8, 1915 at Bredenbury, Saskatchewan. Janet spent time in Minnedosa, Virden, Broadview, before settling in Brandon, where Janet also pursued a career with the CPR. Janet was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golf and curling. She was loath to miss a game when the Brandon Wheat Kings were home, and would tune in on her radio when they would travel. Until very recently, she and her dear friend Roberta Ratz could always be found in the bleachers of baseball and hockey games, or circulating at any of Brandon’s community events. Janet was also a member of the United Church Women and the Rebekah Lodge. Upon her retirement, she traveled extensively, including a trip to her father’s beloved Ireland. She kept up with colleagues, friends and family, and was always keen to hear news. In recent years, she made her home at Riverheights Terrace, then Fairview Care Home. Janet was predeceased by her mother in 1937 and her father in 1982. She left this world on December 24th, 2009. MADDEN: Barry Madden was born April 1, 1939 in Rivers, Manitoba. He was the oldest son of Stuart and Gladys Madden. He spent all of his life in Rivers, through grade school to grade ten. He attended the Brandon Agricultural and Homemaking School in 1955 - 56, then on to the University of Manitoba 1956-57, graduating with a diploma in agriculture. Barry was a member of the Rivers Air Cadets through which he obtained his pilot's license at the age of sixteen. He took his dad, his brothers and friends up flying many times. As a cadet, he also won several awards for rifle marksmanship. Barry was also an accomplished violinist. He studied the violin under Alex Whyte and played for many years. Barry was a skilled welder, mechanic and machinist. He farmed and worked in the repair shop with his dad and brother for over forty years. Barry and Lynn were married in 1966. Together they raised three children: Sherry, Holly and Stephen. Nothing meant more to him than his family, his grandchildren and his home. He was so proud of each of his kids, what they accomplished and who they have become. Sherry did all the flower arrangements, Stephen made the metal flower container for the gravesite, Holly wrote her thoughts and read them at the service. Holly's words: "I have been to numerous services and am always amazed at the number of "great people" that have touched our lives. Listening to the eulogies, I sometimes wondered if I was at the right funeral. Focusing on positive traits and accomplishments of a person is good but they need to be balanced with a sense of honesty. Long before Dad was diagnosed with PSP, he struggled withthe disease of alcoholism. He couldn't tell us why he drank and when he did, he was a totally different person. He said and did things that were hard on all of us. He won the fight against alcohol. We were so proud of him and though those times were difficult, he knew that we loved him and forgave him. He taught all of us kids, how to drive and how to water ski. Some of us took longer to learn than others but he would drive the boat until we wereready to stop. Dad was proudest when he could pull two at a time behind the '80 Merc. Dad loved Dodge vehicles, trucks had to be Dodge Rams. My firstcar was a '67 Coronet. After putting my car into a roadside dugout, Dad had it running that afternoon, knocking a lot, but running. He and I worked all summer rebuilding the engine. By the time I left for university, it was running smoothly. Dad went hard at all things, good and bad. We will always remember and love him for it." Barry's most prized possession was his brown dodge truck. He got it as a standard 6 but he and Stephen changed it over to an automatic V8. How you can get 2 tons of wood on a half ton; but they did it every Saturday, every summer, for as long as Stephen was at home. AsBarry got older, we as a family knew that something was wrong. He had trouble walking, was falling, losing strength, and other little changes. In March of 2007, he was diagnosed with a rare progressive brain disorder, PSP, which would rob him of his mobility, strength, memory and eventually his speech and ability to swallow. He fought long and hard, never complained and kept his sense of humor to the end. He just wanted to come home. The end came peacefully on Monday, January 25, 2010, with his family by his side. He will live on in our hearts and memory. Barry is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Lynn; daughters Sherry (Ron) Mistal of McCreary, Manitoba, and Holly (Scott) Bodnarchuk of Beausejour, Manitoba; son Stephen (Charity) Madden of Clanwilliam, Manitoba; grandchildren: Amara and Kyra Mistal, Curtis and Kadence Madden. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, their spouses and children, several cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and mother-in-law Marg Black. He was predeceased by hismother, father and grandparents; several aunts, uncles and father-in-law, Jim Black. In keeping with Barry's wishes, a private family graveside service was held on January 28, 2010. Donations in memory of Barry may be made to the Rivers Personal Care Home, Box 428, Rivers, Manitoba, R0K 1X0 or to the Rivers Handi Transit, Box 520, Rivers, Manitoba, R0K 1X0. Expressionsof sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
