CARBERRY — Skip Braden Calvert, (17 years of age), third Max Van Kommer (17), second Braden Orchard (15) and lead Nathan Malfait (15) won six consecutive games at Gladstone and Plumas Feb. 7-9 to capture the 2013 Manitoba High Schools Curling Championships.
They defeated Gimli 9-1 in the finals of the B-side after trouncing Brandon’s Vincent Massey Vikings 10-2 after seven ends in the semi-finals.
In Thursday’s games, Carberry trounced Calvin Christian of Winnipeg 11-1 and St. Claude Scorpions 5-3 at Plumas. In Friday’s matches, they edged Sanford 7-6 and downed Gimli Lakers 8-3.
For coach Grant Calvert, it was the fifth time Carberry Collegiate boys had won provincial medals in a seven-year span. The Cougars won gold medals in 2007’08-’09 and 2013. They captured silver medals in 2010.
"It was a great experience and somewhat unexpected," Grant said. "We were able to practise each Monday evening at the Carberry Curling Club."
Skip Braden Calvert said "it was our long term goal to win our Zone 7 and the provincial curling championships. We received the Manitoba High School Curling banner, gold medals and T-shirts."
Curling second for Sanford was Barb Spencer’s son. Barb and her daughter form one of Manitoba’s top women’s competitive rinks.
Coaching the Gimli boys was Patti (Vande) Wuthrich, a member of Manitoba’s Curling Hall of Fame and a former outstanding women’s skip from Stoney Mountain.
"Carberry really kicked our butts but our regular skip, Coulton Lott, was in Fort McMurray as Matt Dunstone’s third," she said. Dunstone’s rink won the National Junior Men’s title and will represent Canada in Sochi, Russia for the World Championships.
Emily Dyck of Garden Valleys (Winker) defeated Vincent Massey Trojans of Winnipeg 8-7 in the girls B-side finals. Neither Carberry nor Garden Valley had to play an A-B final as they won both A and B events.
Cale Dunbar, who curls competitively out of Carberry, was one of the key host committee organizers.
