The Westman Scottish Association has donated $200 and a Globe thistle to the Daly House Museum’s Victoria Garden.
On July 20, Scottish association vice-president Kim Haddow and treasurer Barb Andrew made the presentation to museum curator Eileen Trott and Sylvia Barr, chair of the garden committee.
The funds come from the Scottish association’s pavilion at the Lieutenant-Governor’s Winter Festival held earlier this year.
The thistle, which has been the national emblem of Scotland since the 13th century, will be planted in the garden’s front flower bed next to the flag pole.
"This elegantly coloured plant will be a beautiful addition to our garden," Daly House curator Eileen Trott said.
"Thanks to the generosity of the Westman Scottish Association, a piece of our garden will now commemorate the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the Selkirk Settlers to Manitoba and the numerous settlers of Scottish origins, who have influenced the growth and success of our province in countless ways."
Following the presentation, Barb Andrew said that "the many volunteers that host the Scottish pavilion during the annual winter festival are proud to invest in the community and this financial donation and Globe thistle for the Victorian Garden is one way to give back ."
Philanthropy of the Westman Scottish Associations will enhance the progress of the garden’s construction before it is opened to the public.
As well as the continued maintenance of the flower beds, there is still a fair amount of work to be done in the garden, including the installation of a bandstand this summer.
The garden is scheduled to be open to the public Sept. 16.
