On Feb. 29, with hand raised, Betty Froese became the newest member of Brandon’s 2520 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, affirming her enrolment with the Canadian Forces in the Cadet Instructor Cadre Branch of the Army Reserve.
Officer Cadet Froese has worked with children and youth of all ages throughout her 12-year career as an educational assistant in both the public and private school systems.
Joining the cadets first as a volunteer, she witnessed how both civilian and military personnel demonstrated mentorship to these young people. Wanting to do more, she decided to join the Cadet Instructor Cadre.
"It was one of those moments in life when you stop and recognize where you are, what you’re doing and who’s all standing beside you," Froese said of her induction ceremony.
"This was the first swearing-in ceremony that many of the cadets had ever been part of and to share this with them, as well as my family, was amazing!
"It is truly an honour to be a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and especially to be part of the excellent team at 2520 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps 71 Field Battery RCA Cadets."
The Army Cadet program teaches youth, ages 12-18, numerous skills and military training but more importantly the cadets are taught leadership skills and to be strong examples in their communities and schools.
The program provides many opportunities for the youth to be involved in outings such as field exercises at CFB Shilo, ski trips, campouts and summer camp training at various centres across Canada and overseas. These are all sponsored by the Department of National Defence, making it the largest youth organization in Canada.
