Word Nerds - From 'dript' to 'dung', Scrabblers proffer weird, wonderful

Here we go again, folks, with the good, the bad and the downright ugly words that have been played on local boards recently.

Carol Enns offered up some words common to Scrabblers but to others they were pretty darned unusual. She contributed ‘dript,’ ‘pee,’ ‘ouzo’ and ‘burrito’. One could say 'dript’ might be from the old English ‘dryppe’ while ‘ouzo’ is a fine Greek drink; ‘burrito’ is very Spanish and ‘pee’ is downright pithy.

An affluent businessman Dev laid ‘wallets’ on his board, he’s in the money now, it’s quite clear. Tis where he keeps his many dollars won in Winnipeg recently.

Margie Hilash played ‘supple,’ ‘odea,’ ‘bayer,‘ ‘quirk, and ‘coz’. Need we explain that ‘bayer’ is not the aspirin maker but perhaps a baying hound dog? Dev Lallawooa donated ‘piu’ and ‘jetty’. Amy sallied forth with ‘beery’, ‘fiques,’ ‘yowie’ and ‘toughen’ then added ‘sun’ to ‘burnt’ for sunburnt. Her bonus words were ‘salient,’ ‘helping,’ ‘

Jane Martin laid claim to ‘torrid,’ ‘qi’ that vital force in Chinese thought as well as ‘veep’ as in vice president. Nancy Dressler found ‘chores,’ ‘ferns’ and ‘lazes’.

Fred Saunders’ cool and unusual offerings included ‘jural,’ ‘jawan,’ ‘inia’ and ‘woad’. What’s a ‘woad’ we were all dying to know and Fred claims it is a blue dye. Fred’s bingoes, those words that earn an extra 50 points for Fred were ‘quinces,’ ‘protean,’ ‘tensions,‘ ‘’smearing’ and ‘homelier’.

Len Sandeman’s lengthy "Plays of the Week" were numerous to say the least. There was ‘started,’ ‘neatest,’ ‘songster,’ ‘nearside,’ ‘strident’. ‘escapes,’ ‘genders’ and ‘toilets’.

And, speaking of which, there are times when the words made by the players are what is known as scatological, in other words they are words that pertain to elimination of fecal matter. Along that same tract were ‘dung,’ ‘turd,’ ‘guts’ and ‘poop’ but Len Sandeman of course claimed that ‘poop’ was also a shipping term. If there had been a prize offered, perhaps a roll of toilet paper would have been appropriate.
