INTERNATIONAL PEACE GARDEN — In celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouts, Sue Winter, program specialist of the Dakota Horizons Girl Scouts, organized a weekend stay for Girl Scouts at the International Peace Garden.
The peace garden location is very fitting, as opening day, July 14, 1932, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts from Canada and American Eagle Scouts and Girl Scouts, filled the role of guides and were sources of information to those in attendance.
The Girl Scout centennial is being held in conjunction with an Arbor Day celebration. It all takes place this Saturday and the public is invited to join area Girl Scouts for the festivities.
Refreshments will be served at 10 a.m. in the Interpretive Centre. At 10:30 a.m. Tom Claeys, of the North Dakota Forest Service will give the opening program greeting.
Other presenters invited for the ceremony are: North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple; Larry Kotchman, State Forester; Doug Hevenor, International Peace Garden Chief Executive Officer and Sue Winter, program specialist of the Dakota Horizons Girl Scouts.
Tree seedlings, donated by the North Dakota Forest Service, will be distributed to the public attending the ceremony. The public can either join the Girl Scouts in planting their seedlings or take them home.
The “Girl Scout’s Grove” will be located along the approach to the North Dakota Order of the Eastern Star Overlook Picnic Area. The combined grove will consist of Siberian Larch, Black Hills Spruce and Juneberries running through the riparian zone of Lake Udall.
