Currently based in Winnipeg first and foremost for career reasons, the Perms are and will always be a Brandon band.

I’d like to start the “Gig Face” file with this pic, since this dude is in my bands. He is the fiercely fast-fingered fretboard freak Mike Leach. Mike is known for his work in Groove Kitchen, A Purposeful Grimace (APG) and countless other groups that he’s filled in with around these parts. Usually, Mike is the one melting faces with his intense solos! This pic seems to be a complete reversal on that.

They’ll never forget their Westman roots and will always hold their humble beginnings on Clark Drive near and dear to their hearts.

Throughout their five- (and soon to be six-) album career, they’ve gone from rattling the walls of the basement at their parent’s home in Brandon’s west end to rattling the rafters at many a packed sweaty club across Canada.

They’ve even made some inroads into a handful of markets in the States as well as Europe. In fact they’re European tours have become an annual deal that they plan and market mostly by themselves.

During their Christmas break, they decided to drop me a line with this quick update that includes a cool offer for their fans!

From the desk of Dan the Merch-Man at The Perms head office:

Hey, Perms-fans! Dan the Merch-Man here, happy to tell you The Perms have returned to Winnipeg, safe and sound.

The European tour went really well — the crowds were amazing, and John got to do a lot of sight-seeing.

But now that they’re on home soil, The Perms have no time to rest on their laurels. They’ll be writing and recording songs for Album No. 6 over the next few months, and Chad is actually editing Perms Podcast No. 17 this very moment — it should be ready & live on this page very soon. Along with the video for "Make It Through," of course.

And now, the really big news! With the holidays almost upon us, The Perms are giving presents to three lucky Perms fans. That’s right, it’s another contest — and this time, the prizes are bigger and better than ever!

There are three great prizes to be won:

Grand Prize — a Fender guitar, previously used by Chad and signed by The Perms; a CD box set containing all five Perms albums; one T-shirt; two buttons; and two stickers.

Second prize — a CD box set, one T-shirt, two buttons and two stickers.

Third prize — a CD copy of "Sofia Nights," two buttons and two stickers.

Just send your name, email address, and location (city and province/state will be fine) to theperms@theperms.com

It should look like this:

Name:

Email address:

Location (city, state/province):

We will be making a random draw for the winners. If we draw your entry, we will contact you and ask for a mailing address (and shirt size and if you want the CDs autographed) so we can send your prize!

All entries must be sent before 11:59 p.m. on Saturday January 5, 2013. The drawing will take place on Jan. 6, and the winner will be contacted that day. Good luck!

Stay tuned, Perms-fans!

2.) Catch your favourite musician with ‘Gig Face’ on

Announcing a new feature for our Locals Only page: I call it "Gig Face of the Month"!

Kind of like the employee of the month awards that you see at various establishments, except this one will honour the hard rockin’ musicians in Westman.

Consider this as a cool new way for bands to burn their fellow bandmates. We all like a good ribbing every once in awhile and sometimes that ribbing can be derived from a photo.

As all musicians know, in mid-concert there are times when we make weird and or humourous faces. I’m sure most of us will have a cool sense of humour with this, plus it will be a fun way to help promote your band while giving everybody a light-hearted chuckle.

If we get enough of them sent in, we can even start a gallery. Then possibly start up a "Gig Face" of the month contest. The sky is the limit!

So if you have a photo of a bandmate or any musician you know that shows them off with their game face or, ahem, "Gig Face" on, please send it in to me at Frank@KX96.astral.com

3.) Lancaster Bomber the new band in town

Last but not least this week, I’m proud to announce that Westman’s music scene continues to grow. The latest addition comes via the Locals Only section at www.kx96online.com.

By the way, if you or anyone you know is in a local band let them know about Locals Only. Every band is welcome — whether they’re still in the basement or ready for the A circuit club scene stage, there’s a place for them in Locals Only. Consider it a great way to get some extra exposure and best of all, it’s free!

On that note, I would like to welcome the newest band to B-town’s scene, Lancaster Bomber:

Hey Frank! Mike from Lancaster Bomber here. We are a Brandon band that got together two summers ago because we just wanted to make noise! I’m sure you know how that is.

Well, our weekly jam nights turned into something more. A few short months and many beers later, we realized we wrote about half dozen original songs. We want to share those songs, not for fame or money — as we know, that won’t come — but just because we love to make music!

I heard you promote the Locals Only section of your website one morning, and I thought what hell, why not?

So here I am writing you this email. And here are some links to our Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Indiegogo if you are interested.

Cheers brother! Keep on rockin’.
