Happenings on the Scene: Rockin' golf tourney helps kick off RFM 2014

Are you ready for a rockin’ golf tourney?

I’ve accepted a friendly challenge by Rockin’ the Fields Minnedosa (RFM) president Darcy Bialas in what sounds like an amazing tourney. They are still signing up golfers for this fantastic event which will take place later this month out at the beautiful 18-hole golf course by Minnedosa.

Bialas says "entries have been steady but there’s plenty of room for more. The more the merrier. This is going to be a fantastic kick-off party for RFM 2014."

The tourney used to run during RFM weekend but Bialas felt the need to move the date based on a few reasons.

"We moved it in hopes to bring out more people and create more of a buzz about RFM weekend. Also a lot of us are a little burnt out from RFM and this way we have more time to put the site to bed after the fest."

There are plenty of reasons to enter including free tee prizes, door prizes, specials and a ton of hole prizes. Bialas says the organizing committee has really outdone itself this time around.

"There is a potential of over $115,000 in prizes. Every hole has been transformed into a Par 3 and offers $500 in prizes for three closest to. We have plenty of hole-in-one prizes too. Two holes at $5,000 each five holes at $10,000 each and a $50,000 hole. The $50,000 hole has been put together by nine local business groups. We also have score prizes for low, middle and high score. We’ve also lined up about $3,500 in door prizes to be won at the after party / social."

Bialas says the party kicks into high gear following the tournament. The rock music theme will be maintained throughout the day as 96.1 BOB FM will be on location playing tunes all day then there will be live entertainment at the social afterwards.

This sounds like an amazing event that and Bialas feels it will fill up quick as it’s an amazing deal. "$100.00 entry gets you a tee gift, dinner, 18 holes of golf (cart not included), supper, specialized all day and evening entertainment."

What would a top notch golf tourney be without a few silent auction items added into the mix? Bialas says they have that covered too.

"Some of our items up for grabs thus far include: Two Dauphin Countryfest tickets, signed jerseys and a golf package. The social evening after the golf will be a great party and is included in the entry fee."

That’s a whole lot of action packed into a golf tourney and I’ve already circled it on my calendar. I hope to see all golf fans and RFM supporters alike out on the course for this one. By the way it’s for any level of amateur golfer but no carded pros please. Sign up by calling the pro shop at 204-867-3151 but hurry, this rockin’ golf tourney will fill up fast.

We’ll be starting a new feature next week called "Manitoba Music Maker Monthly."

There are so many great local musicians who deserve to be featured in this segment and I expect the spaces to fill up quick each month. That’s where you come in. Everybody knows somebody who plays in a band. It may be a member of your family, could be a co-worker, classmate or a teammate.

Whatever the case is if you feel he or she needs more recognition for the talents they possess and take pride in furthering, then they need to be featured as Manitoba’s Music Maker Monthly. Simply send their contact information to: Frank@961BOBFM.ca. Please put "Manitoba Music Maker Monthly" in the subject field and include a brief description as to why they deserve the monthly title as well as how you know them.

This particular coverage in "Happenings" will be the ideal opportunity for local bands / musicians to get more exposure. It can also be used as a calling card for possible gigs they may play in the future!

Frank McGwire is a radio personality and booster of the music scene in Brandon and Westman.
