Harrison celebrates, language and the arts

Mime, dance, drama and poetry were all part École Harrison’s celebration of language and the arts in their production “La beauté d’une langue / The Beauty of a Language”.

A culmination of nine months of hard-work on behalf of École Harrison students and staff came to fruition on June 7 at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium with their production "La beauté d’une langue / The Beauty of a Language".

Over the past school year, the students and staff of École Harrison broadened their French language experiences as a result of a grant from the provincial government’s French as a Second Language Revitalization Program.

This grant enabled the school to facilitate a wide array of French cultural learning experiences within the arts, co-ordinated by Julie Phillips.

Three hundred and fifty students, the entire student body of K-8 students, learned different Beaux Arts — mime, improvisation, dance, juggling, role-playing, drama, visual arts and poetry.

École Harrison invited Basic French classes from other schools to attend the afternoon performance. Grades 3, 4, and 5 Basic French students from Riverheights, Valleyview, J.R. Reid, Green Acres, Betty Gibson, and Kirkcaldy were able to attend.

An evening performance gave École Harrison students a chance to celebrate together with family and friends, and several invited guests including assistant Deputy Minister of Education Jean-Vianey Auclair, trustee Kevan Sumner of the Brandon School Division, and the fine arts clinicians who provided workshops for the students of École Harrison: Lisa Vasconcelos of Mecca Productions, Monique Roy-Keller of Steppintime Dance Studio, and Isaac Girardin of Jest Stix Juggling.
