Two Westman graduates are among the four outstanding Manitoba students to win bursaries from the Manitoba Beef Producers.
To qualify for the $500 bursary, students must plan to pursue post-secondary studies related to agriculture and the rural economy. The selected students are all children of active Manitoba beef producers.
Melanie Eastman, from Hartney, plans to take a pre-veterinary medicine B.Sc. at Brandon University, while Jared Buckley, from Oak Lake, is enrolled in the heavy duty equipment technician program at Assiniboine Community College.
“MBP is proud to invest in these students and the future of agriculture in Manitoba,” said Manitoba Beef Producers president Ray Armbruster. “We congratulate all of the winners and we wish them a successful year ahead as they pursue their studies.”
The other two winners are Keith Johnson, from Komarno, who is enrolled in agricultural and food sciences at the University of Manitoba, and Michel Rey, from St. Claude, who taking a M.Sc. in animal science, at the U of M.
As part of the application process, students were required to submit a short essay on the importance of the beef sector in Manitoba. Each winner’s essay will be printed in the next issue of Cattle Country, Manitoba’s source for beef cattle news.
Agriculture is one of the key economic drivers for Manitoba’s economy. Beef production represents Manitoba’s single largest agricultural sector in terms of the number of individual farm operations in the province.
Beef producers play a vital role in the maintenance of Manitoba’s economic and environmental sustainability.
“It is important to encourage younger generations to choose a career path in agriculture or a related field and MBP is pleased to help support these outstanding students achieve their goals,” Armbruster said.
