Over their four years of playing doubles badminton, Vincent Massey students Olivia Pieroni (left) and Katherine Lee just got better and better. In this, their Grade 12 year, they were the best, winning the gold medal at the provincials in Winnipeg. (SUBMITTED)
The Vincent Massey High School girls doubles badminton team brought home gold from the provincials — the first time in 16 years a Brandon athlete has won a gold medal in badminton.
Grade 12 students Katherine Lee and Olivia Pieroni went undefeated at the provincial tournament hosted by Louis Riel school in Winnipeg May 2-3. They beat Westwood two games straight in the final with scores of 21-16 and 21-19.
Lee and Pieroni have played together the past four years, making it to provincials each spring. They’ve climbed the ranks over the years, finishing ninth in Grade 9, third in Grade 10 and fourth in Grade 11, capping it off with gold this year.
This was a good way to end their high school badminton career, matching the gold medal they won at the Winter Games this past season.
Other Massey athletes who played in the provincial tournament were Taylor Curtis in ladies singles with a seventh place finish, Duncan Campbell in men’s singles finishing 11th, and Luke Giesbrecht and Clark Whelpton in men’s doubles finishing the round robin in 20th place.
Meanwhile, the mixed doubles team from Crocus Plains high school, Jayden Sisson and Kendall Omeljanon, finished 13/14th.
Massey coach Christine Curtis couldn’t be more proud of her athletes and would like to thank all people who helped to male this season a great success.
