National Family Week begins Monday and this year’s theme is "The Grandparent Connection."
The bond between a grandparent and grandchild is very special. Many of us carry warm memories of spending time with our grandparents when we were young. In turn, parents often look forward to the day when they have grandchildren of their own.
In a world that is becoming more and more fast-paced, one of the best gifts grandparents can give young people is time. Holding and rocking a baby, cuddling up to read a story book with a toddler, tossing a ball in the yard with a preschooler, or making a craft with a schoolager are all simple activities, but it is the time spent together that really counts.
Consider sharing a talent or hobby with your grandchildren. Spend time in the kitchen together baking or preparing a favourite meal. If you have artistic or musical abilities, consider showing or teaching your skills. Collectors can pass their subject knowledge on to the next generation.
In turn, ask your grandchildren to share their interests with you. You might discover a new pastime!
Teach your grandchildren a song from your childhood, and ask them to teach you their favourite songs as well. Search YouTube for TV shows you used to watch and compare them to the shows of today.
You can help your grandchildren find a connection with the past. Talk about your childhood, and how times have changed since you were young. Tell stories about your grandchildren’s parent as a young child. Share tales that you remember your parents or grandparents telling you about their own childhoods. Go through old photo albums and talk about the people and places you remember.
Family history stays alive when stories are repeated to new generations. If you are able to take it a step further, you might wish to record some of these memories, either with a video recorder or written in your own words.
Most of all, just enjoy each other’s company. The special times you share today will become part of your family’s story for years to come.
national family week kickoff party
This Sunday from 1-4 p.m., grandparents, parents and children of all ages are invited to attend Brandon’s third annual Kickoff Party to celebrate National Family Week. It will be held at Princess Park and will feature a free concert with Fred Penner and other children’s entertainment, as well as fun activities and community displays.
