Dogs are social creatures who generally enjoy the company of people and other canines. While this is true for most dogs, it isn’t always the case.
Some dogs are simply not fond of people or other dogs and they need a little extra space.
It may be that they are snappy with strange dogs, or it may be that they are fearful of them. These are not bad dogs — just animals that need a little room while their owners are walking them.
In some cases, owners are working on training with their dogs and do not want their dog to be approached by people or other animals during that time. The dog may be a rescue dog that is being rehabilitated — or it may be a dog that is simply working on manners and training while out walking with his owner.
There are also situations where dogs need a little room for medical reasons. Maybe they are grumpy from medication, or maybe they are recovering from a surgery and need to walk without the excitement of meeting new people or animals.
Regardless of the reason, there are some dogs that just need a little extra space.
A rescue organization south of the border has come up with a simple solution that seems to be gaining popularity — a yellow ribbon tied to the leash.
The ribbon is tied about half way between the dog and the handler, where it is highly visible and lets others know to give this dog a wider berth.
If you see a dog with a yellow ribbon tied on his leash, exercise caution.
It could mean the dog is snappy, fearful, in training or feeling under the weather.
For this method to be effective, it is important that we spread the word — especially to children.
If they see someone walking a dog with a yellow ribbon tied in the middle of the leash, they should not approach and should leave plenty of room when passing the animal.
