Because the summer fair has many different components to it and has such a long history, organizers realized it would be difficult to select just one winning picture.
For some, the fair conjures up images of rides lit up against the night sky, or the aromas of fair food — cotton candy, mini donuts and corndogs. Others are reminded of happy memories of years gone by, while others focus on how their children have been able to get up close to farm animals, kangaroos, reptiles and more.
Contest organizers came up with four categories in which to win prizes, along with choosing a ‘Best Overall’ photo.
Following are the winners:
• Best Heritage — Cherri Whelpton, whose submission captures the Stephens family from Cardale showing Aryshire cattle at the summer fair around 1955. The photo includes three generations — B.J. Stephens, Herb Stephens and Bruce Stephens.
• Best Night Life — Antoliano Lao for "Fireworks"
• Best Family — Ron Leslie
• Most Thrilling — Katie Solbeck for "Up In The Air"
• Best Overall — Antoliano Lao for "The Fair"
The contest goal was "to visually showcase the memories that we have been a part of for 130 years," said Karen Oliver, Provincial Exhibition general manager. "We (saw) this contest as a sort of ode to the community and as a way to thank people for all their years of attending the fair."
