The Rotary Club of Brandon recently hosted 82 Brandon Squadron cadets, officers and parents at the club’s luncheon meeting.
The annual luncheon allows the cadets and officers to report their past year’s activities and successes.
Rotary has been the Squadron sponsor since 2001, providing volunteer and financial assistance along with mentoring in several areas.
Col. (retired) Doug McLennon, former member of 82 Squadron, was guest speaker. McLennon is a member of the Manitoba Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada and is responsible for the league’s gliding program in Manitoba. He also noted the aviation opportunities currently available to cadets.
Shirley Slack of Melita was also in attendance, representing Westman Air Cadet units.
Commanding officer of 82 Brandon Squadron, Lieut. Audra Harrison of Brandon, reported on the Squadron’s activities over the past year, and thanked, as did McLennon, the Rotary Club of Brandon for its continuing support.
"82 Brandon Squadron has been declared the most proficient in Manitoba by Provincial Committee of the Air Cadet League of Canada," she said.
Squadron Warrant Officer Eric Church also talked of the Squadron’s achievements this past year. He then presented a donation from the Squadron cadets to Rotary Club President Nonny Cancade, who accepted it on behalf of the Rotary Westman Foundation.
Cancade said how very gratified the Rotary Club was to see the 82 Brandon Squadron continues to grow and excel. He also acknowledged the significant efforts of Rotarian Rick Wilson for supporting and mentoring the cadets.
