Substitute and Solve - Dandruff shampoo key to removing bloodstains

Hi Reena,

I have both of your books and followed your instructions on page 76 of Household Solutions 2 for the removal of blood stains. The instructions called for 1 cup of cornstarch, 2 tbsp. salt and half cup hydrogen peroxide. Mixing this was very difficult as the mixture was really solid. I tried to apply the mix to the blood stains on the bottom sheet and the mattress pad by putting the two items into a large mixing bowl — just the stained parts — and left it for a few hours and when I checked, the mixture had gone quite solid so I added a bit of water to loosen the mess. I left everything soaking overnight and when I checked, the blood stains were now brown and there were dark orange/yellow patches and spots over the part of the sheet and mattress pad that were left in the bowl to soak. Today, I tried some bleach and it removed the brown blood stain but didn't touch the orange/yellow spots and patches. I finally put it in a hot wash cycle and it came out the same as it went in — a real mess. What do you suggest I do? These bed linens were on the bed in the guest room of my condominium and so I am responsible for replacing them if I can't get them clean. Thanks for any help you can give me, Jeanette

Sorry that you had trouble Jeanette!

Since writing the books, I have learnt that there are two easier ways to remove bloodstains from fabrics. The first is to rub the area with Head and Shoulders Dandruff shampoo. Leave for an hour and rinse with water. Repeat until stains are gone, I was given this tip from a women how cleans linens in a nursing home. The second solution is plain three per cent hydrogen peroxide. Soak the area for a few hours and rinse. Repeat as necessary.
