The Kiwanis Kar Derby may be months away, but the dead of winter is the perfect time for kids and their parents to unleash their imaginations to design and build the perfect racer.

Last year close to 100 children competed in the races, held on Rideau Street and Lorne Avenue East.
This year’s fundraising event — the 27th annual derby sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Brandon — will be held on June 1.
"The event is very popular with the participants and attracts lots of spectators," Kiwanis Club president Vern Gilbertson said. "We operate a food booth and have face painting, and mascots to entertain the young folks."
Cost of the kit, which includes wheels, axles, steering mechanism and a brake assembly, is $200. That price includes a registration for one boy or girl ages eight to 14 (as of Dec. 31, 2013).
Using the basic kit, participants can then build a car of any design they wish.
"In the past we have cars built as a milk carton, fire engine, a grand piano and a toboggan like the picture I sent you," Gilbertson said.
The races are divided into three age groups — eight to nine year olds, 10 to 11, and 12 to 14.
Trophies are presented to the winners and runners-up in three categories: Most Original, Best Decorated and Best Designed cars.
Last year’s judges included Brandon’s mayor, the commanding officer of CFB Shilo, and a representative from the Brandon fire department.
"The money Kiwanis raises goes to help children," Gilbertson said. "We recently donated $10,000 to Massey Manor for a playground that is being built adjacent to their apartments. In addition we donated $25,000 to the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre.
"We are now involved in another major project, building another 40-plus apartments in a new Kiwanis Courts across Rosser Ave. from the existing Kiwanis Courts. These facilities accommodate tenants with physical handicaps."
