VIRDEN — They’re bursting their brass buttons in the Dragoons cadet corps in Virden.
One of their own has been named the top Royal Canadian Army Cadet in Manitoba.
On Oct. 30, during the garrison parade of the XII Manitoba Dragoons Cadet Corps, Cadet Warrant Officer Cole Ramsey was presented with "the President’s Trophy for being the Most Outstanding Manitoba Army Cadet."
LCOL (Ret’d) Sandy Will, president of the Manitoba branch of the Army Cadet League of Canada, made the presentation, saying the trophy recognizes Ramsey’s excellence as a Royal Canadian Army Cadet, a citizen, and community member.
The Grade 12 student from Elkhorn School beat out nominees from 10 other Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in the province.
Living on a farm just outside of Elkhorn, Cole is the Regimental Sergeant Major of the cadet corps located in Virden.
He has been a Cadet Dragoon for four years, and has attended a sports and fitness three-week course at Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake and an adventure leader course at the cadet summer training facility at Vernon, B.C., for six weeks.
Each province and territory in Canada has selected a Top Army Cadet, which in turn they submit for the national award, "The Walsh Memorial Sword".
Cole is one of the top 13 Royal Canadian Army Cadets in all of Canada.
His top cadet trophy was presented in Virden at the conclusion of the XII Manitoba Dragoons Cadet Corps’ Garrison Parade in the Virden Legion Assembly Hall.
Special guests present included the area cadet officer for Manitoba, the cadet liaison officer from CFB Shilo, the mayor of Virden, the Ramsey extended family, one of Cole’s Grade 12 teachers, the past president of the Ladies Auxiliary for Branch No. 8 of the Royal Canadian Legion, the president of Branch No. 8 and, of course, the presenter, LCOL Sandy Will who drove out from Winnipeg to make the presentation.
Cole’s principal at Elkhorn School is Capt. Kevin Tutthill, the Deputy Commanding Officer of the XII Manitoba Dragoons Cadet Corps.
