Box office top 20: 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' debuts at No. 1 with $72.6 million

NEW YORK, N.Y. - "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" swung to the top of the box office with a $72.6 million debut, one of the summer's best openings.

The "Planet of the Apes" sequel, directed by Matt Reeves, unseated another sequel, "Transformers: Age of Extinction," from the top spot after the Michael Bay action film led the box office for two straight weeks.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theatres Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theatre locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Rentrak, are:
