CTV's 'Kevin Newman Live' abruptly cancelled after seven months on air

TORONTO - "Kevin Newman Live" has been cancelled after just seven months on CTV News Channel.

The prime-time current affairs program debuted in November and aimed to bridge the divide between the YouTube generation and traditional TV news.

CTV News president Wendy Freeman confirmed Monday that the show had been cancelled.

"Decisions like this are never easy, and we thank the 'Kevin Newman Live' team for their hard work and dedication over the past seven months," she said in an emailed statement.

Newman has decades of experience, including years as anchor of "Global National" and as a co-host of ABC's "Good Morning America." He launched "Kevin Newman Live" after a stint hosting CTV's "Question Period."

The nightly show tackled topics ripped from social media — male "My Little Pony" fans called "Bronies," or a smartphone app that helps users record videos of police brutality — as well as more conventional news.

CTV declined to comment on the reason for the cancellation. The show's weeknight 9 p.m. ET time slot will be filled by CTV News Channel flow.

It is unknown what Newman will do next and he was unavailable for interviews Monday.

Colin Horgan, a producer for the show, tweeted Monday that the show will go off the air immediately.

"Programming update: there is no program anymore. Kevin Newman Live is done as of today, kids," he wrote.

Newman followed by tweeting a behind-the-scenes time-lapse video of the show's production.

"Thank you to our viewers. We had a great time together," he wrote.
