Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby bound for TIFF kids film festival

TORONTO - Elmo, Cookie Monster and Abby Cadabby are among the special guests bound for this year's TIFF Kids International Film Festival.

The "Sesame Street" gang will take part in several "Sesame Street"-themed activities April 20 and 21, which include a meet-and-greet as well as a free screening of the film "Elmo's Alphabet Challenge."

The events are part of the annual TIFF Kids festival, for children aged three to 13.

It all kicks off with "The Legend of Sarila" (La lgende de Sarila), which is billed as Canada's first 3D animated feature. It's inspired by various Inuit legends and features the voice of Christopher Plummer.

The closing night film will be Germany's "Famous Five 2" (Fnf Freunde 2), the sequel to last year's TIFF Kids audience award-winner.

TIFF Kids takes place at TIFF Bell Lightbox from April 9 through April 21.

Other films include the award-winning "Mother, I Love You" from Latvia and "Miffy the Movie," from the Netherlands.

This year's festival will include 117 films — 29 features and 88 shorts — representing 40 countries.

"The Legend of Sarila" follows three Inuit youths living on the Arctic tundra who go in search of Sarila, a promised land, hoping to save their clan from famine. It is also the story of a fight to the death between two shamans — the young Markussi and the aged Croolik. It's recommended for kids age 8 and up.

"Famous Five 2" centres on a crew of young detectives who run into trouble when their teammate is kidnapped by crooks who believe he can lead them to the Green Eye, the most valuable jewel in the world. It's recommended for kids age nine and older.
