Junos rescind nomination for Elisapie, award to Shawn Hook instead

TORONTO - The Juno Awards have rescinded Elisapie's breakthrough artist of the year nomination due to a technicality, replacing her in the category with B.C. singer/songwriter Shawn Hook.

In a press release, the Junos said Elisapie was actually ineligible for the category because she won a Juno in 2005 for Aboriginal album of the year as part of the duo Taima.

Only first-time Juno nominees can be nominated in the breakthrough artist category.

Hook is a pianist and guitarist from Nelson who released his major-label debut, "Cosmonaut and the Girl" in May.

He joins Cold Specks, Grimes, Kira Isabella and the Weeknd in the breakthrough artist category.

The Juno Awards will be held in Regina on April 21 and broadcast on CTV.

"It's very unfortunate that this situation occurred, and it in no way reflects on the authenticity of Elisapie's unique talent and artistry," said Juno Awards president and CEO Melanie Berry in a statement.
