Kim Thuy's celebrated 'Ru' among finalists for Amazon.ca First Novel Award

TORONTO - Vietnam-born author Kim Thuy's celebrated immigrant tale "Ru" is among the finalists for the 2012 Amazon.ca First Novel Award.

The Montreal-based Thuy wrote about a Vietnamese family adjusting to a new life in Quebec in the Random House Canada title.

The book was recently a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, and in 2010 the original French-language version won a Governor General's Literary Award.

Other finalists for the Amazon.ca prize, which gives the winner $7,500, include the Giller long-listed "Y" (Hamish Hamilton Canada) by Vancouver native Marjorie Celona.

Ottawa-based Scott Fotheringham is a finalist for "The Rest Is Silence" (Goose Lane Editions), Vancouver's Anakana Schofield is nominated for "Malarky" (Biblioasis), and Toronto-based Pasha Malla is a contender for "People Park" (House of Anansi Press).

Stuart Woods, editor of Quill & Quire, is the head judge for the First Novel Award, now in its 37th year.

The jury is rounded out by Meaghan Strimas, Madeleine Thien and Alexi Zentner.

The winner will be announced on April 24 in Toronto.

All finalists receive a $750 gift certificate.
