Saskatoon Soaps celebrate 30 years of performing improv comedy on stage

SASKATOON - One of North America's longest-running improv comedy shows is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

The Saskatoon Soaps hit that benchmark with a special show Friday night at the Broadway Theatre.

The format of the show has evolved over the years — it used to be a running soap opera with the same characters and a continuing story line each week.

These days, the troupe has scaled back from weekly midnight shows to once a month in an earlier time slot.

Over the years, the Saskatoon Soaps have coaxed some high-profile guest stars to appear on stage, including actress Catherine O'Hara, comic Red Green and "Sons of Anarchy" star Kim Coates, who was born in Saskatoon.

The company also points out several of its current and former players, including Brad Grass, Blaine Hart, Rob Van Mennan and Ryan Josephson, appeared on the Saskatchewan-produced sitcom classic "Corner Gas."

Josephson says it's the people involved that makes the show work.

"We know each other inside and out and onstage we can anticipate what the other is going to do," he says.

"It's so much fun on stage and we're still making people laugh."
