Alberta Premier Redford applauds U.S. report on Keystone pipeline

EDMONTON - Alberta Premier Alison Redford says she is pleased with a report from the U.S. State Department on the Keystone XL pipeline.

Redford says the draft report is progress towards a decision on the 1,800-kilometre line, which would take crude from Alberta's oilsands to refineries in Texas.

A final decision on whether to allow the line through the United States rests with President Barack Obama.

Redford says she is confident Obama's decision will be sound and based on, in her words, "science and fact."

Opponents of the pipeline feel it supports carbon-intensive operations such as the oilsands and their contribution to global warming.

Redford suggests Keystone is important for North American energy security.
