DSquared2, Coco Rocha among winners at inaugural Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards

TORONTO - Twin designers Dean and Dan Caten earned a double victory at the Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards.

The Toronto-born brothers behind the renowned Milan-based label DSquared2 were recognized with an award for outstanding achievement at the inaugural gala, which was held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto on Saturday.

The Catens also received the CAFA for international Canadian designer of the year, which honoured a recipient that has achieved success abroad and brought attention to Canadian talent on the world stage.

Billed as the first event of its kind in Canada, the CAFAs featured 10 award categories recognizing homegrown talent within the fashion industry.

Toronto's Jeremy Laing was named womenswear designer of the year, while Calgary native Travis Taddeo, now based in Montreal, received the menswear designer of the year award.

Ottawa-born twins Byron and Dexter Peart took home accessory designer of the year honours for their brand WANT les essentiels de vie, which features a classic collection of bags and accessories.

Toronto-born, Richmond, B.C.-raised Coco Rocha was awarded the CAFA for model of the year.

Joe Fresh creative director Joe Mimran — who was named honorary chair of the 2014 event — received the Canadian Style Award, which recognizes a recipient who embodies the spirit of the country and serves as an unofficial ambassador for homegrown fashion and culture.

Photographer Chris Nicholls took home the Image Maker award, presented to a Canadian photographer or filmmaker who has made a significant impact within the Canadian industry.

George Antonopoulos, a contributing fashion editor at Fashion Magazine and Men's Fashion, was named stylist of the year.

Reigning Toronto Fashion Incubator New Labels winner Sarah Stevenson was also victorious at the CAFAs, taking home the emerging talent award.

The CAFAs also paid a special tribute to Fashion Television Channel host Jeanne Beker, honouring the longtime fashion and media maven with its vanguard award.____
