Ground beef from store near Fredericton may contain pieces of metal

FREDERICTON - The Public Health Office in New Brunswick is advising people to avoid eating ground beef from a store near Fredericton because it may contain pieces of metal from a meat grinder.

The meat was packaged and sold at the Hanwell Village Mart on Route 640.

Dr. Cristin Muecke, the regional medical officer of health in Fredericton, said metal pieces from a meat grinder may have contaminated the beef.

She said a broken part was discovered by store employees.

"They were taking the machine apart for cleaning and realized that one piece was broken," she said Wednesday. "They could see a metal ring that is part of the machine was broken into pieces."

She said the staff recovered most of the pieces but some are still missing.

Muecke said the store immediately notified the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, who then notified provincial officials.

There have been no reports of anyone being injured, she added.

The lean ground beef, family pack lean ground beef, and ground sirloin was marked as packaged on March 4, with a best before date of March 6.

The public is advised to discard the beef or return it to the store for a refund.
