A 13-year-old teen faces several charges but a 12-year-old passenger has escaped a court date after police say they took a truck for a joyride.
Police were called Sunday afternoon at about 2 p.m. to the parking lot of a business on the 300-block of Sixth Street North, where the truck was spotted driving in an erratic manner.
Officers say it looks like the truck’s owner had left its keys inside, and two youths spotted the opportunity to enhance their driving skills.
When police arrived, the kids skedaddled, but were quickly apprehended — thanks in part to help from a civilian who was driving by.
The 13-year-old driver received several tickets under the Highway Traffic Act, including operating a vehicle without owner’s consent, driving a vehicle under 16 years of age, careless driving and others — including one related to hitting a fence, which caused minor damage to the truck.
The 12-year-old passenger was not charged and was turned over to his parent.
